Originally commissioned by the nonprofit NY Coalition for Healthy School Food (NYCHSF) for a pilot project in NYC Schools (in conjunction with the Dept of School Foods of the NYC Board of Education), the songs are now used in teaching programs across the country, from food banks to universities, and the entire collection of songs is featured as part of the USDA's Healthy Meal Resource System - 'Team Nutrition'.

This album is a Parents' Choice Approved Award Winner. The title song is featured as the first track of Putumayo's Picnic Playground - heard in over 100 countries. The song 'Junk Food Man' appears on the compilation Healthy Food For Thought, nominated for a 2011 Grammy. And the Kitani Coloring Book features the title song as illustrated by children.

700 CDs were distributed to teachers through the University of Southern Maine's Muskie School of Nutrition over a two year period. Hundreds more have been distributed free of charge to low income families through programs such as the Orfalea Foundation in southern California, and the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts.

Jay's dynamic, multi-media concert in which he presents the songs at elementary schools, libraries, and other venues has already been experienced by over half a million kids.

When I was just a tiny little pup Back in the day when I was growing up I learned how to do a whole lot of stuff Learning new things, I just couldn’t get enough How to tie my shoes, how to button my shirt How to cross the street so I wouldn't get hurt I didn't know nothin' about healthy food But now healthy food is my new attitude I’m singing this song ‘cause I want to be strong I want healthy energy all day long I’m happy – yay! when I work and play I eat healthy, natural, foods all day I always pigged out on TV dinners, Then I went on a diet trying to get thinner I ate 10 portions, like there were 10 of me Now I wouldn’t do that to my worst enemy Greasy junk food, sugary stuff Stuffing my face like I couldn’t get enough I didn't know nothin' about healthy food But now healthy food is my new attitude I ate cake for breakfast, and ice cream for soup Chocolate by itself was it’s own food group. Brushed my teeth with soda, and flossed with candy. I ate whatever junk food was handy No oats or brown rice or whole grain bread No fruits or veggies, I ate sugar instead. I didn't know nothin' about healthy food But now healthy food is my new attitude So now, here I am, a grown-up man I eat healthy food whenever I can Tastes better than eating all of that junk And I’m fast as a chipmunk, strong as a tree trunk So I’m all grown up and now I’m takin’ my turn I’m going to sing about everything I learn I didn't know nothin' about healthy food But now healthy food is my new attitude

Strong Bones 04:02
STRONG BONES Jay Mankita c 2005 I got bones in my fingers, bones in my toes Bones in my head, well, everybody knows Bones in my hands, bones in my feet Keeping' 'em healthy with the food I eat Give me strong bones, give me healthy bones Not sticks and stones, but healthy bones…. Give me strong bones, give me healthy bones Not sticks and stones, but healthy, flexible skeleton bones Skeleton bones like to run and play They don't much like sittin’ around all day Exercisin' in the light of the sun Skeleton bones gonna have some fun They can’t help themselves; its not their fault But skeletons don’t like too much salt Too much soda or junky food, Puts your skeleton bones in a frightening mood Exercise when I work and play The bones in my skeleton like it that way They like to run and jump and stretch and move My skeleton bones like to dance to the groove Calcium helps your skeleton grow Milk’s not the only place to get it though Calcium that your skeleton needs Is in rutabaga, raisins, and sesame seeds In Broccoli, Bok Choy, Black turtle beans Butternut Squash and Mustard greens Fruits and veggies, seeds, beans, and grains Have Calcium for bones and brains

Try New Foods Jay Mankita c 2005 Try new foods you haven’t tried before They’ll wake up your tastebuds, open up the door To a whole lot of flavor, so do yourself a favor And try new foods So many things I just don’t know I try new foods wherever I go (make new friends, think new thoughts, sing new songs) I’m livin’ my life in a different way So I try new foods every day Make new friends that you haven’t made before They’ll wake up your heart, and open up the door To a whole lot of fun, once you’ve begun To make new friends Think new thoughts that you haven’t thought before They’ll wake up your mind and open up the door To a whole lot of wonder, over and under When you think new thoughts Sing new songs that you haven’t sung before They’ll wake up your voice and open up the door To a whole lot of music, once you choose it and Sing new songs

Chopsticks 02:19
Chopsticks Jay Mankita c 1990 I never thought chopsticks were easy to use When I used ‘em my noodles fell onto my shoes And the floor was soon covered with noodles and pineapples Mushrooms and tofu and rice I learned to play this song on piano I must have been about five or six It’s pretty short and very famous This composition is called chopsticks This song on the piano requires two hands But you only use one when you write with a pen This utensil’s like having two pencils in one hand Like writing this song and then writing it again Now maybe I’m just making excuses Or maybe I need a better brand And yes, it’s true; there are some people Who play the piano with just one hand Now noodles and pineapples, mushrooms and rice, And tofu are some foods that I think are nice But there’s food in my hair and without silverware I feel like my meal has been eaten up twice It would be good to learn the secret and eat with chopsticks by and by So fill my plate and pass the chopsticks And maybe I’ll give ‘em one more try

Junk Food Man Jay Mankita 2006 Who's makin' money tellin' children lies? About happy clowns eatin' burgers and fries Puts the fast food in the children's hand "Its good for you", says the junk food man. Don't believe the junk food man They put 10 or 12 teaspoons of sugar in a can That's the junk food company plan He puts the can of soda in the childrens' hand "Its good for you", says the junk food man. Don't believe the junk food man The junk food man is gonna hook you in - He'll play you kid, just like a violin And just like drugs or cigarettes, he makes more money the more kids he gets The junk food man he gets his pay To tell you lies - lead you astray Puts the candy in the children's hand "Its good for you", says the junk food man. Don't believe the junk food man Junk food man, junk food man, he’ll try to get you if he can… Junk food man, junk food man, don't believe the junk food man You spend your money to pay his due But he's got no respect for you Puts the fake food in the childrens' hand "Its good for you", says the junk food man. Don't believe the junk food man The junk food man is gonna hook you in - He'll play you kid, just like a violin And just like drugs or cigarettes - He makes more money - the more kids he gets Who's makin' money tellin' children lies? About happy clowns eatin' burgers and fries Puts the children in the company's hand (Its good for you) says the junk food man - don't believe the junk food man Hey, you want this toy? It's the real McCoy You'll just have to eat more junk food, boy Got your playground here – and your action gear Watch your money disappear More shakes and pies, more burgers and fries Eat that junk food, swallow those lies
